NHLC brings together the NDC and the Education Action Zone to work together within a family of 11 schools and share best practice. The NDC investment in NHLC is £5 million.
Early on in the programme there was widespread recognition that local schools were not delivering satisfactorily for their pupils and were not ‘fit for the 21st century’.
The new joint-faith learning centre, Christ the King, opened in January 2009, was built on the site of the former St Edmund of Canterbury Catholic high school. The learning centre provides education for 11-16 year-olds and its modern, flexible infrastructure makes it accessible for the whole community. It acts as home to several sporting, cultural and community organisations, so improving the perception of the area.
A joint-faith primary school will be located on the same site as part of the learning campus and will be funded primarily by North Huyton NDC. Replacing the existing St Dominicís Infant and Junior school, it is expected to open early 2011.
Set up by the local Sure Start programme, the New Horizonís Children’s Centre is aimed at families with children up from 0 - 4 years, offering a wide range of activities and opportunities for local parents and children. North Huyton NDC has contributed just under half a million pounds to capital and maintenance costs of the new centre.
NDC funding has been put towards outfitting schools with new ICT equipment, including 55 laptops and 27 interactive white boards.
